Day 268 – Torres del Paine – Day 8 of 10

Today would be sort of a double day 21k of distance but almost all of it downhill. The plan was to skip the refugio grey campsite and go straight towards the Paine Grande campsite. That way tomorrow I could get to campamento Italiano early and tackle the valle frances in the same day.

My day started off with more views of glacier grey.

Further down the trail I found this bridge that has been taken out by a rock slide, a reminder that while beautiful, nature is also dangerous.

A little after the rock covered bridge there was in interestingly rigged ladder bridge of sorts. I don’t recall ever being on such a ladder bridge. It was quite peculiar and I am not sure why walking on the ground wouldn’t have been easier.

Aside from bridges and glacier shots I ran into some great flowers today. The first were some tiny little orchids. They are almost impossible to photograph with the strong winds in the area. I would say 1 of about 20 photos comes out clear. I’ve started to cheat by holding the stem below the shot in order to get them in focus.

I made it to refugio grey where I had lunch. I had been making good time and spent at least an hour enjoying my food. I also grabbed some M&M’s from their shop. The ability to buy snacks such as this on the trail is an amazing luxury. I have done this several times along the trail. The items are not cheap but when you are on the trail, you feel the price is worth it. Things I have bought are M&M’s, a can of pringles, eggs, tomato sauce, and an unknown chocolate bar.

Once I had lunch, I continued down the trail and quickly saw a bunch of foxglove flowers which I enjoyed immensely. Up until then a large collection of flowers such as this was not seen.
