Day 255 – 260 – Puerto Natales

I arrived pretty late in Puerto Natales at around midnight. There I met up with Kevin again. I met Kevin back in Ushuaia and shared a tent with him for a few nights. Kevin had been nice enough to hold me a room at his hostel so I wouldn’t be on the search late at night. He was on his way out the next day but at least we got to catch up that night. We retired to bed at 3am after sharing stories of our joys and perils. After a long night catching up with Kevin, I woke up the next day with a crappy cough. I walked around town exploring the area and reminiscing about when I was last here with Wilson, Muriel, and Cyrille. Things in the street would remind me of moments we shared. The atm where we pulled out funds, the restaurant we went to,…

Day 261 – Torres del Paine – Day 1 of 10

Today I woke up feeling as good as I have in a while. I packed up my stuff which included about 12 days of food rations and went to a restaurant to have a big meal. Afterwards I went to my hot chocolate spot, scheduled two more posts, and hastily made my way to the bus station. I wanted to pick up some tortillas and some meat for my first few days but I was short on time and decided to skip it. There is always the option of buying food in the park despite the extortionary prices I have been warned about. After about a 2hr bus ride I arrived at the park. I paid my fees and I attempted to settle my trip with a park ranger. Unfortunately the campsite I wanted was not available for two more nights. That meant I would stay at the lower Torres…

Day 262 – Torres del Paine – Day 2 of 10 (Part one)

I headed to the hotel to check the availability of the Chileno campsite. Unfortunately it was solidly booked. That meant having to stay an additional night at my current campsite. At least on the way back I got to see the sun hitting the Torres, making them glow a spectacular bright orange. My day seemed shot. I had the upper Torres sight booked for tomorrow so it did not make sense for me to put in a 9hr day to up to the Torres and back down only to repeat tomorrow. I opted to go back to sleep since the campsites are super noisy and I did not sleep well last night. When I woke up for the second time I cooked breakfast, and realized I could hike out back from where I came and make a day hike out of the Sarmiento trail. I think this trail is overlooked…

Day 262 – Torres del Paine – Day 2 of 10 (Part two)

To continue from yesterday, after sitting with a herd of guanacos for a while, I continued down the trail and spotted my first nandu; it’s like an ostrich. I was pretty excited about seeing one. After inadvertently scaring him away, I continued down the trail taking pictures of more guanacos and the landscape. Eventually a sign veered me off to a different trail where there were some cliff paintings. There weren’t many but the few there were, were cool. The way there was very picturesque as well. In doing research on these paintings I found out these specifically were tampered with in 2011. An unknown person or persons decided in their infinite wisdom to accent the 6,500 year old paintings. When viewing them I thought they were too well preserved considering the area they were on was quite exposed to the elements. For those that read Spanish here are a…

Day 263 – Torres del Paine – Day 3 of 10

Today was going to be shorter than yesterday (8k/5 miles) but today I had all my stuff to take with me. While eating breakfast I finally was able to get a clear shot of this little sparrow that has a little Mohawk. I’ve seen them everywhere down here but they don’t stay still long enough to get them in focus and get a good look at their stylish bird doo. Some of them have an orange patch around their necks. I’ll try to get a shot of that one in the future. The hike up was inclined gaining 430m ( about 1,400 feet) and the hottest day I’ve been exposed to since getting here. I took very few photos on the way up. I was probably too eager to get to the top to finally see the towers. I made it up in about 3hrs and 15 minutes. I checked…
