Day 219 – My Long Journey to Ushuaia

After close to two months back home I am back on the road. I left in a hurry making me feel that things were not how they should be. Despite my feelings around that, the time had come. My flight departed at 3:25pm from JFK destined for Ushuaia, Argentina. The first flight went surprisingly quickly. With the large selection of movies available and conversations with Pablo, I felt like I was in Buenos Aires in no time. Pablo was sitting a seat away from me across the isle. He was an enthusiastic gentleman that was going back to Argentina after 13 years in the states. He was filled with nervous boyish energy because his repatriation was due to his plans to marry his high school sweetheart. They had found each online after 18 years apart and had kept a long distance relationship for over a year since getting back in…

Day 220 – Zombie Walking Through Ushuaia

Since I was so exhausted, the plan was to go to sleep once at the hostel in Ushuaia. Instead, I showered, changed some dollars at the hostel, organized my bag a little, and took a 4 plus hour walk around Ushuaia. I took in the views of the mountains, industrial ships, and this one particular boat that seemed stuck and abandoned. The explorer in me really wants to go into this abandoned ship. I also noticed that the marine birds here look exceedingly pristine. Their colors much more vibrant and cleaner than those I’ve seen in other areas. I walked away from the touristy area and wound up in a more residential neighborhood looking at the different homes. There were some houses that tended to their gardens exceptionally well and had beautiful vegetation. Others were pretty run down. The disparity in appearances amongst neighbors was interesting. The shot below is…

Day 221 – Relocating and Prepping for a Hike

Walking around yesterday was probably not the most productive use of my time. Being the 1st of the year meant that almost nothing was open. Today I checked out of my first hostel and decided to walk the 30 minutes to my next hostel. On the way there I noticed a Japanese gentleman hiking from the airport. I waited for him and walked to the city with him until we split paths. Like many others I’ve met here, he is on a multi-month trip as well. I dropped my stuff at the hostel and contacted Kevin which I had met on the flight in to Ushuaia. He was taking care of his lost bag situation and would meet me at the hostel after that. We met up and walked around city leisurely for a while before grabbing some food. While walking we ran into Yu, the Japanese gentleman I had…

Day 222 – Hiking Laguna Esmeralda – Day 1 of 2

I woke up a little sick this morning but decided I would ignore it. I decided to go on a short hike to Laguna Esmeralda and camp overnight. The transport that was supposed to arrive at 1 picked me up around 4pm. Luckily the light here lasts so long that it didn’t really make a difference. We picked up some other passengers and continued on to the lagoon. When we “arrived” I found myself part of some paid tour that started off with a hike in another area. I tagged along until the transport took us to Laguna Esmeralda where I broke off from the pack. The hike was only about 3.5 miles up and less than a thousand feet up. If not for the mud it would have been pretty routine. The hike up was super muddy and at times the mud would go over the ankle. I was…

Day 223 – Hiking Laguna Esmeralda – Day 2 of 2

I woke up more sick than the day prior but on the bright side, I had my best night of sleep. Nothing but the soft sounds of the mountains; no drunks coming in at 3am and people leaving at 6am. In order to get to my ride on time I had to make good time up the mountain. I left much of my gear and headed up in a day pack. The beaver damage was more visible as I went up.While picturesque, this is not the natural state of the landscape. I made good time up. While I didn’t summit I was happy with the progress and got a good look at a chunk of ice. The views down were also quite nice. I made my way down and right before I got to camp these two little guys were hanging out. It’s strange but other than a few birds…
