My camping education was formed through experience (good and bad) and one educational resource that stands above all. It is the book I read when I was unfamiliar with camping equipment, types of gear, etiquette, and safety. I know of no better all around resource than Freedom of the Hills. It’s often referred to as the bible. Freedom of the hills is a mountaineering book but covers all the topics a hiker could want. It is used by hikers, climbers, outdoor enthusiasts, and the core audience, mountaineers. Want to know the different types of synthetic materials for clothing and gear? Want to learn to use a compass? How to tie knots? How to build a shelter? Climbing techniques? Signs of altitude sickness? This book has you covered. At 592 pages, it is an extremely comprehensive resource. To this day I use it as a reference when I forget something. I am such a fan that I have gifted it a bunch of times.
